Back in FM2018 I build a calculator to work out each individual player Mentality within a tactic, which at the time was driven by player Duty, some Team Instructions, Team Shape and Team Mentality. It was no easy feat. Each player mentality ranged from 1-20 and could change based on a number of variables. It was no wonder people struggled to understand it.
With FM19 things got a whole lot easier. Not only was Team Shape determined by the Duty of the players on the pitch, rather than being a variable you could select, but the player Mentality was given one of seven labels, rather than being a value between 1-20.
A player’s Mentality affects their attitude on the pitch in relation to balancing their attacking and defensive duties within the overall framework of the Team Mentality. Players are afforded a more attacking approach with a Mentality closer to the maximum, whilst a more defensive outlook is taken when it is set closer to the minimum end of the scale.
A players Mentality ranges from: Very Defensive > Defensive > Cautious > Balanced > Positive > Attacking > Very Attacking
I try to think of Mentality in terms of risk. The higher the Mentality — and that goes for both the player and the team overall — the higher the risk that will be taken. There is so much that goes into a tactic that I cannot possibly put it all here, however, what I feel is lacking is the ability to see every player Mentality on the pitch for any given tactic.
The below calculator will allow you to see each individual player Mentality, depending on the Role (Inside Forwards only) Duty, Team Instructions, and Team Mentality you select. Everything that can affect his Mentality is selectable below.

Please note, it might take a second or two for the Mentality values to show. Until I can convert this to something more web friendly, I’m stuck with Excel for now, which isn’t the quickest.
If you spot anything out of the ordinary with this calculator, please do let me know and I’ll get an update out as quickly as possible!
