05|04 DERNIÈRE LIGNE DROITE: Another Title Challenge, Another Tough Run-in

Welcome to the latest instalment of my journey with Stade Rennais F.C. Last time out, I took you through our January 2024 transfer window. In this update I'll be reviewing our final matches of the season.

SeasonFive.EpisodeFour | Dernière ligne droite

We’ve come to the home stretch; dernière ligne droite. The fifth season comes to a close. After last season we wanted to have another good show in the league after getting knocked out of the Champions League, again.

February 2024 – May 2024

FEBRUARY 2024

A disappointing month as we were knocked out of the cup on penalties against Marseille.  It was a familiar tale as 22 of our 23 shots yielded no goals.

In the league things were ticking along nicely, with goals coming from the front three, proving our diversified attack was working efficiently. Impressively, we were also keeping teams out at the other end of the field, too.

Gilles Schmitt continued to find the net with ease, which is always pleasing to see from the Advanced Forward.

MARCH 2024

Another fantastic month in the league and our rise up the table continues.

We ended the month top of the league and genuinely looked like we could go on to win it. Schmitt and bey from the left were flying and it looked as if the league title was in the bag…

The trouble is, I got a little ahead of myself. As usual.

APRIL 2024

Ah.

Monaco and then Lyon halting our excitement. Winning just half of the points available to us in April was a massive blow to our title hopes. Losing to Monaco had allowed PSG to get back into the top spot.

Just ahead of the Lyon game the press was all over the title race but it looked as if the second place would be our position again.

However, losing to Lyon put us down in third.

MAY 2024

With the pressure off us, being dumped down into third position so late in the season the players found their belief again, smashing 7 past Guingamp and then defeating Lens rather easily.

Old habits die hard though, as Nantes managed to squeeze a point out of this match with just 1 of their 3 shots on target. Fortunately, 1 of our 12 hit the net so we at least got a point from this game.

The league was wrapped up against Bordeaux in a nothing game really. We weren’t going to win the league and Champions League football was already secured.

A strange ending, and one the board weren’t happy with either. Thoughts of walking away from Stade Rennais have set in.

I’m not sure what more they want, really. Pony up €300M so I can match PSGs spending or accept Champions League football.

Another season finished. In the end, we just ran out of juice as those with bigger squads and better mentality coped with the demands better. Schmitt signed a new contract, so hopefully, that’ll put off any clubs trying to sign him.

We still need a left-back, and I wouldn’t mind another central midfielder who can also play as a defensive midfielder. Other than that, I’m happy with the squad who can grow and mature next season.

With an average age of 23.71 it is the lowest in the league and considerably lower than the 25.74 league average. PSG perhaps unsurprisingly has the highest at 27.89 — which probably goes to show how they score so many late winners.

Thanks for following along with my save this year!
