FM20 Save with Stade Rennais Football Manager Saves

04|02 MATCHS ALLER: New System, New Heights

Welcome to the latest instalment of my journey with Stade Rennais F.C. Last time out, I took you through preseason, up to an including the end of August. In this update I'll be reviewing our matches up to the end of the calendar year.

Keeping hold of Camavinga and Palacios for another season at least was a masterstroke which is proving itself on the pitch.

September 2022 – December 2022

Here’s what has been going on at Roazhon Park over the last couple of months.

SEPTEMBER 2022

Ah.

Okay so perhaps things aren’t as good. On the face of it anyway. But realistically, looking at the fixtures this was never a run of games that I expected to pick up many points from. The fact that we didn’t get an absolute roasting by any of these teams is a miracle.

Schmitt is doing well for me playing as a loan complete forward up top on his own. I do have a bit of a problem now in that I have 4 strikers, and only a couple of them can play this role. I might have to let one of them leave if I cannot keep them all happy.

OCTOBER 2022

We started better, but still lost many games.

It hasn’t been a month for strikers, and the worrying fact is 17-year old Ayari’s goal (2 minutes into his debut) were the first from a striker in 9 matches.

Now I don’t need my striker to be scoring a lot of goals in this system, the wingers need to be chipping in as well, but they’re not creating either. I think I need to make a few changes to the roles here to get a bit more out of this squad and a few more goals.

We’re having plenty of possession but little in the way of actual goals.

Oh and talking of strikers, did I mention the Stade Reims game? I’ll say no more.

NOVEMBER 2022

No league games due to the World Cup being over the winter, just the single Champions League match. It didn’t mean anything as we were already out but the €900k for the draw will come in handy.

Because of our position, there will be no Europa League football, either. Which to be honest I’m fine with. I can concentrate on the league with the smaller squad I have now.

The Champions League, in case you were wondering…

As for the league, well, given all the red dots above you’d think that we were really struggling, but a combination of PSG completely going to shit and a few lucky points when we perhaps didn’t deserve them and we find outselves top.

This is of course just momentary. I don’t expect to be here at the end of the season, but I’ll enjoy it over the month-long break we now have until January.

A quick update because of the reduced fixtures. No European football might be a godsend as we’re going to have a lot of fixtures piling up now due to the elongated winter break.

My next post will be a short one covering the January window.
