FOOTBALL MANAGER 2020 Football Manager Stories

01|01 PRÉ-SAISON: HERE WE GO!

Welcome to the latest instalment of my journey with Stade Rennais F.C. Last time out, I took you through my tactical philosophy. In this update I'll be reviewing preseason.

SeasonOne.EpisodeOne | Pré-saison

It has been a good start to life at Stade Rennais. I feel like I’ve gained a good understanding of the players I have available to me, and the first three months in charge have flow by!

June 2019 – August 2019

THE TRANSFER WINDOW

It’s the fun part, right? Player purchases, player sales, player promotions from the youth sides. Well, I switched the transfer window off, so there’s nothing to report here. We go into the season with the players we have available.

Transfers in

None.

Transfers out

None.

Youth player promotions

Sacha Boey | 18 years old | Defender (Right)

Just one promotion to the first team. We are short in the right wing-back department, so I’ve promoted young Sacha Boey to come in as cover for Hamari Traoré. I had originally planned to bring in young Guela Doué who is very highly rated by my staff, but Sacha has a bit more experience, so he gets the call-up.

PRESEASON 2019 RESULTS

It was a bit of a mixed bag when looking at the results. Offensively, we were brilliant, especially Raphinha, but defensively, we were so bad. We’ve conceded stupid goals, but I’ve made some tweaks to the system going into the season, so hopefully, we can hold our own when it matters most.

Unfortunately, on the eve of the Alcorcón match, a new ME dropped with some significant changes. We had one game to see how it played out. Not bad but it wasn’t great.

We go into the season with our 4-3-3 looking vulnerable. And we have PSG up twice in a row!

AUGUST 2019

We could hardly be upset with the first couple of results. We were never going to beat PSG in our opening two games, but to come away from them without a battering is an achievement in my opinion. In the Trophée des Champions match, we had 53% of the ball, 7 shots with 4 on target and more than held our own, but we just didn’t have the quality.

Against Nîmes, we were defeated by a 92nd-minute goal, and the draw to Amiens was probably deserved.

Not the best start for us, considering. We look so shakey at the back, with 7 goals conceded in 4 games, I need to make some changes to try to make us stronger and harder to score against.

As you can see, not great reading. We’re level on points with the bottom team, Strasbourg after the opening 3 games. We need to find a formula and fast. Raphinha hasn’t been in it and Naing may as well not be playing right now.

That’s it for the short preseason update, I need to turn us around, and fast or this will be a very short journey!
