FM19. HOW TO PLAY WITHOUT ATTRIBUTES!

Swap attributes with data bars!

A few people now have asked me how I have switched the player attributes off and how I get the data bars to work in the game now that they’re no longer selectable from the preferences, so I thought I would write a post about it so this information can be shared around the community

Given that this is now a mod and not an option, I fear it is only a matter of time until we cannot do this, unfortunately.

THE BACKGROUND

So why am I doing this for my FM19 save? Well, after FM18 I had the idea to remove player attributes from player profile screen to add a level of realism into my save. I found it too easy looking for players with certain attributes and having the ability to see the attributes easily. It didn’t strike me as a realistic way to play, because a manager wouldn’t know that player X has a 19 dribbling attribute, for example. Realistically, a manager would just know that a player is good at dribbling.

You can hear me talk about this with Tony Grasshopper and Daniel Gear on Fake FM19 News – Episode XVII.

The aim of this and for my save in Football Manager 2019 is to add a level of realism and to force my team selection policies more towards training effort and form rather than player attributes. Sure, I’ll still be able to see if a player has great agility, as with Kagawa below, but a number won’t be applied to it, it’ll just be an indication to me. Which I think is far more realistic.

It’ll also force me to adjust my transfer policy to look more into player stats and trusting the rating of my scouts rather than going to the big names and who is half a star better.

Realism level increased.

This is Shinji Kagawa. As you can see his attributes are completely removed. I use Dortmund yellow for all of my player’s key attributes (those over 15), and then grey for all others. With this view, I can see which attributes are key to the role I want him to play and how well he will fit, those yellow ones he excels in, the grey needs work. Those attributes with a green background are the primary attributes, and those blue ones are secondary. Moreover, I can also see an overview of his collective mental, technical, physical etc. attributes using the attribute analysis radar chart alongside the attribute bars.

As you can see, I can only see a bar representation for primary and secondary attributes, with no visibility of any of his other attributes. While some might be important, like determination, as long as he is putting in the performances for the first team, and training well, his determination isn’t key to me.

GETTING THE BARS IN GAME

First, I am using The FM19 Rensie Custom Skin(s) v1.2 to get this very awesome player panel. You don’t have to use this, but I think you should!

Second, you need to switch on the bars. This download will swap the attributes you see on players and staff profiles with data bars.

Download this file: graphical_attribute_view.xml

Place it here:

  • PC Users: C:\Users\[your name]\AppData\Local\Sports Interactive\Football Manager 2019\Preferences\version 3
  • Mac Users: Macintosh HD⁩ ▸ ⁨Users⁩ ▸ [yourname] ▸ ⁨Library⁩ ▸ ⁨Application Support⁩ ▸ ⁨Sports Interactive⁩ ▸ ⁨Football Manager 2019⁩ ▸ ⁨Preferences⁩ ▸ ⁨version 3⁩

If you want to hide attributes that are not applicable to the role the player is performing, then follow this next step, otherwise, skip to the changing the colours section. What the next file will do is switch off the stripe rows on the player attribute table.

You can see on the below, there’s a background colour applied to every other attribute, e.g., corners, dribbling, first touch etc.

In order to hide the bars for attributes that are not needed, we need to switch this off.

Download this file: player attributes panel.xml

Place it here:‎⁨

  • Documents⁩ ▸ ⁨Sports Interactive⁩ ▸ ⁨Football Manager 2019⁩ ▸ ⁨skins⁩ ▸ ⁨[the skin you use]⁩ ▸ ⁨panels⁩ ▸ ⁨player⁩

CHANGING THE COLOURS

Now you have done all of this, it’s time to load the game. When you’ve done that you will see that your player attributes still use the default colours. So next, in the game head to FM ▸ Preferences ▸ Interface ▸ Skin Colours

The tick the Show advanced settings button to reveal the RGBA settings for each attribute level and adjust like the below.

Screenshot 2018-11-04 at 10.46.56.png

The top attribute, the one I show in Dortmund yellow above, is where the strongest attributes will show. I have set mine at attributes 15 and above, but you can also increase or decrease this as you see fit. The rest will be hidden by using the grey colour.

You can, of course, use any colour combination, and if you wish to see all attributes, then set the colour appropriately and they will still show.

And that’s it. Changing all these settings will give you the same attribute view as me.

Any issues or questions, drop me a note in the comments below.

Until next time, tschüss.

  1. Hi Oliver. I’m interested in playing with just the databars – sounds interesting. I downloaded “graphical_attribute_view.xml” but can’t find the right path on my laptop to put. Under “appdata” there isn’t anything of relevans. Do you know where else to put the file??? Thanks for an different perspective on the game
